There are many free open source alternatives that you can download and use for free, here is a list of ten useful and popular alternatives.

7ZIp is a very good file compression utility that supports most of the major formats such as ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR.

GIMP is a very powerful photo, image editing and manipulation package.
Scribus for Desktop Puplishing (DTP).
Inkscape is a vector based drawing package used by illustrators and artists.

Welcome to hubpages. Its true that open source is a great concept. Soon open source will replace the paid software market.
