Saving Money With Open Source Software

By

Let's face it, software can be very expensive, and you can often end up spending more on various software packages than you actually spent buying your computer!

There are many free open source alternatives that you can download and use for free, here is a list of ten useful and popular alternatives.

OpenOffice

A complete office package including:

Writer - Word Processing

Calc - Spreadsheet

Impress - Presentation

Draw - Drawing Package

Base - Complete Relational Database System

GNUCash and TurboCash for accounting

7ZIp is a very good file compression utility that supports most of the major formats such as ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR.

FileZilla for transferring files via FTP.

GANTProject for Project Management.

GIMP is a very powerful photo, image editing and manipulation package.

Scribus for Desktop Puplishing (DTP).

Inkscape is a vector based drawing package used by illustrators and artists.

Thunderbird is a powerful email program.

Unfortunately this article is currently too short to contain links to each of the sites where you find out more about the software and download it.  However, I am happy to point people to the right place who need the links and can't find them on google.
